Claude Meier

Council of Sentinels

Divisionnaire, Armée suisse Former Chief of the Swiss Armed Forces Staff | Former Senior Officer, Geneva Centres for Security Policy

A general officer and former military pilot, Claude Meier devoted his career to questions of defence, security, strategy and anticipation. He joined the Air Force as a professional pilot, flying the F-5 Tiger and F/A-18 among others, commanded Fliegerstaffel 17, and held roles covering operations, planning and doctrine development. In 2016 he was appointed divisionnaire and Chief of the Army Staff, a post placing him at the junction of political decision-making, military strategy, capability development and resource allocation. He then joined the Geneva centres dedicated to peace and security policy. His career gives him a particularly relevant perspective on a world where the line between civil and military security, technology, economics and geopolitics grows steadily more porous. He brings to the Club des Sentinelles that distinctive culture of anticipation: looking early enough at threats and transformations to preserve the capacity to act and to decide.
